This is the “rock bottom” moment for our political culture, right? I mean, it has to be.
Why though? Please tell me it’s because she doesn’t say anything meaningful regarding her stance, because otherwise I have to disagree.
[Edit: Dave was referring to the “I’m You” bit of the ad, which is, admittedly, kind of creepy. What follows is my general feeling regarding the tone of politics and isn’t directed at him in any way.]
Christine O’Donnell might be a crazy person, but fortunately she has every right not to believe in masturbation. She also has every right to look into Wiccan as a teenager. She also has every right to not give a fuck what anyone else thinks about her religion!
In all honesty, we hit rock bottom when we decided that a person couldn’t possibly change their mind or grow up in fifteen fucking years. The problem with our political culture today isn’t anything about the stances of the Tea Party or any other party. The ROCK BOTTOM of our political culture and our culture as a whole is that no one gives anyone else any fucking respect.
Look at me right now even! I think Dave Holmes is a respectable and intelligent guy, but I’m sure not providing that level of discourse at present.
Mostly I just think it’s a shame that we (as in all of the left) are attacking O’Donnell for things that are long ago and have nothing to do with governing our country. If she had said so many years ago that she believed in segregation, that is something to be upset about. If she said she had once dabbled in terrorism, that’s something we should probably address. But these aren’t the issues I care about, and they aren’t the issues that fix this country. It’s a shameful waste of money that any politician would have to clarify their personal and private beliefs (HELLO REMEMBER WHEN PEOPLE STILL SAY OBAMA IS A MUSLIM AND WE GET UPSET OVER THAT? THE POT AND THE KETTLE, DAMMIT!)
I see Chris’ point here, but I also see Dave’s point. I am in no way upset that O’Donnell once considered being a witch. In order to find fortitude and temperance in their lives, some people pray in a chapel on their knees and others menstruate in a coffee can and bury it in their back yards. I personally do neither, but I believe those people’s methods are their right as Americans and none of my business.
What I’m upset about is that this person—as an adult, and not concerning the funny clips Bill Maher has been putting out—has absolutely nothing of substance to say in regards to her political agenda.
I think this can ad can be considered a low point in politics (although I’m sure we can go much lower) because:
1.) Yes, Christine is freaked enough that she feels she needs to make an ad saying she’s not a witch (this isn’t her fault, but more a sad state of affairs in the political realm of the present, where campaign slogans can be “I’m not a Muslim” and “I’m not a Witch” and people can wipe their hands clean like the job was well done and there’s nothing left to do).
2.) Moreover, she goes on to say NOTHING in this ad. She basically says “What do you want me to be? I’ll be that.” That’s the alarming part to me. Isn’t that the OPPOSITE of having a stance on anything? “I’m you.” “I’m going to go to Washington and do what you’d do.” Jesus, if I went to Washington I wouldn’t know what to do at all. I would ask someone directions on how to even get to congress. I want an elected official who has heard my concerns and has explained to me the ways in which to broach and maybe even assuage those concerns through the legislation process. But I don’t want me. What if enough people told Christine that they wanted her to be a circus clown? I feel like she would just suddenly be one. “I’m a circus clown.” (This goes for many politicians). There’s no dignity in that. If I go to Chili’s and the chef comes out and says “Hey, I’m gonna make the skillet queso the way you would make it,” I would leave, because my queso would be shit. Now replace “queso” with “law-making.”
Basically, I’m saying I want SUBSTANCE. Anything with meat on the bone! I don’t think we’re getting much of that from either side right now.
To me, Christine O’Donnell just seems clueless and desperate. At best a blank slate. I disagree with the few stances she’s taken, but that just means I wouldn’t vote for her.But where’s the rest of it? That’s what bothers me. Not the “gaffes” she’s said, if they’re even gaffes.
Although it actually was pretty upsetting when she said the thing about how she would tell the Nazis Jews were hiding in her house.
And I love Chris Cantoni (and Dave Holmes).
