Frankie Fairfield opened for the Fleet Foxes tonight at the Echo. The Fleet Foxes were one of the best live shows I’ve seen, but Frankie is something else entirely. He’s amazing. He is transported right out of 1935 Mississippi. He came to the show on a bicycle with a guitar, banjo, and fiddle all strapped to his back, and all of which were in really poor shape. But he played them SO well, and he sounded like Robert Johnson and Blind Willie McTell. It was like being at a recording studio for a wax cylinder you’d listen to on a Victrola.
This guy has zero internet presence (big surprise). He shows up at the Farmer’s Market occasionally, I hear. This blog said that in addition to his instruments he only carries with him some sheet music and a can of Dax wax hair styling pomade.
Thanks to the blog for the photo, too.
