So far, we’ve had Liebermann, in a ploy to get disenfranchised Hilary voters over to the GOP ticket. He nearly begged them:
“So, tonight, I want to ask you, whether you are an independent, a Reagan Democrat, a Clinton Democrat, or just a plain-old Democrat, this year, when you vote for president, vote for the person you believe is best for our country, not for the party you happen to belong to.” — So what’s best and what you believe, but don’t vote for your party (hint, Democratic party!)
Also: “It shouldn’t take a natural disaster to teach us that the American people really don’t care much if you have an “R” or a “D” after your name.” — It also shouldn’t take a natural disaster to show that those with R’s after their names don’t care about Americans drowning at home.
Also from Liebermann: “Gov. Palin, like John McCain, is a reformer. She’s taken on the special interests and the political power-brokers in Alaska and reached across party lines to get things done.” — Except when as mayor she procured 6.1 million dollars in federal earmarks for the town of Wasilla, population just over 6,000.
And we had Fred Thompson, who mostly told John McCain’s war stories again. Also, McCain is rebellious because he got a lot of demerits at the Naval Academy. And he voted against an invasion of Beirut. And it was tough for him because Ronald Reagan was his hero. So that’s like 2 votes against Beirut.
Also: “For years, members of Congress, Republican and Democrat alike, have gouged the taxpayer with secret earmark spending. Well, he [McCain] has never sought an earmark.” But, as I mentioned earlier, Palin has. Of course, Palin rejected the 200 million plus “Bridge to Nowhere.” But afterward she sent Senator Ted Stevens, who is going to jail, a 70 page memo detailing a request for an additional 200 million plus in earmark funds for Alaska.
But, as Thompson pointed out: “Well, give me a tough Alaskan governor who has taken on the political establishment in the largest state in the union — and won — over the beltway business-as-usual crowd any day of the week.”
The largest state in the union, guys. Largest in land mass. Do you know how many people live there? Just over 683,000. That makes it the fourth smallest in the country. 681,000 people live in Fort Worth, Texas. Most of Alaska is beautiful terrain and wolves. You know, the wolves she wants to send the attack helicopters after.
All this word play, and trickery. It’s bush league.
And then you had Bush himself, live via satellite. He had this to say:
“My fellow citizens, we live in a dangerous world. And we need a president who understands the lessons of September 11, 2001: that to protect America, we must stay on the offense, stop attacks before they happen, and not wait to be hit again. The man we need is John McCain.”
The GOP’s slogan should be “Never forget 9/11, or at least don’t forget until after November 4th, 2008.”
